It can be no surprise to anyone when I say we live in interesting times. The technology that we have at our fingertips on a daily basis has proven to be both evolutionary and revolutionary—connecting us all in ways that previously we never thought possible. A global village that can access information at a moment’s notice, sharing ideas and innovation across boarders, cultures and continents, instantaneously.
So what does this have to do with mechanical and electrical engineering you ask? In fact, it has everything to do with it. The connection we have as a society has brought about innovation in our field that we all live and benefit from every day.
It is easy to think of technology and innovation from a consumer electronics point of view, but seldom do we think of the innovation that surrounds us—buried in the walls or hidden away in rooms of the buildings we all work in every day. The innovation that comes with building sustainable, modern infrastructure is truly the greatest, and most important, technology that we have.
That is why we have created this issue of Design+Build Magazine—to showcase innovation that is shaping, and will continue to shape, the world we live in. From major corporations moving to waste management, to international airports that push the limits of sustainable technology—these are all examples of how our interesting times today will be the foundation of our future.
Enjoy!
